Baldock Beats Waste

Letchworth Garden Shed
The Letchworth Garden Shed, a community interest company which opened its doors in 2023, asks locals to consider borrowing a range of items from their community hub instead of always buying something new. Part of a growing movement of ‘libraries of things’, the Garden Shed works just like any other library – but instead of borrowing a book, you can borrow wide range of DIY equipment, garden games, cooking appliances, crafting materials and more.
The Shed has sustainability at its core, with the items in stock donated from local residents and businesses and even parts of its interior being upcycled from other materials.

Revivel
RevIvel is a community group founded in 2019 with the aim of protecting the upper Ivel chalk stream. There are 255 chalk streams globally - statistically they are rarer than coral reefs and tropical rainforests. The upper Ivel was dry for 18 months to December 2019, largely due to over-abstraction by the water company. However, it is a “perennial” chalk stream i.e. it should never dry out.
We refer to it as a Cinderella chalk stream – very rare and precious but below the radar of many. So we set out to change that!
Global justice
Global Justice Herts and Beds campaign for environmental and social justice on a global scale.
Our current campaigns focus:
• We demand an end to the Fossil Fuel Era and call for a Fossil Fuel [Free] Treaty.
• We oppose corporate trade deals that put profits before people and planet
• We ask that polluters pay out for loss and damages caused by climate change – so affected countries in the global South can receive compensation and adaptation funds.
• Equitable access to medicines and vaccines across the globe

Jefferson Eco CIC
Jefferson Eco CIC sells a range of reusable items crafted from fabric that would have otherwise gone to landfill. All items – such as reusable baby wipes and kitchen towels and vegan wax wraps for keeping food fresh – are made by the Jefferson team and local, ethical and sustainable businesses.
But Jefferson Eco CIC is more than just an eco-shop. Although it started life as a craft initiative running from market stalls, it is now a community interest company operating from a bricks-and mortar shop at 46 London Road, St Albans. The team were inspired by feedback from their passionate customers to create an eco-hub and regular workshops to help people live more sustainably, change minds and tackle the climate crisis. They’ve teamed up with The Greenhouse CIC, a community project designed to promote sustainability, protect biodiversity and reduce the carbon footprint in the St Albans district, which runs above the shop.
